YouTube to Call Out Government-Funded News Videos

YouTube is making it a lot easier to tell if you're watching a government-funded news report.

The Google-endemic streaming site on Friday announced it will start labeling videos uploaded past news broadcasters that take received regime or public funding. The notification will appear below the video, just above the title. It will also include a link to Wikipedia so users tin learn more almost that detail news broadcaster.

"Our goal is to equip users with additional information to aid them better understand the sources of news content that they choose to lookout man on YouTube," YouTube News Senior Product Manager Geoff Samek wrote in a web log post.

YouTube is currently rolling out this feature for viewers in the US, but cautioned it won't be perfect right away. Users and publishers can submit feedback about it via YouTube'due south "send feedback" class. The company said information technology plans to "improve and aggrandize" the feature over time.

"A big goal for us in 2022 is to provide greater transparency across the board to our community of creators, advertisers, and viewers," Samek wrote. "News is an important and growing vertical for us and we want to be sure to get it right, helping to grow news and back up news publishers on YouTube in a responsible manner."

This comes after YouTube last twelvemonth launched a "Breaking News" shelf on the home page to surface reports related to major events. The visitor also added a "Top News" shelf in the search results of certain news-related queries showing reports from reputable sources.
